Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

What is TMS?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a treatment used for Treatment Resistant Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), anxious depression, and related symptoms. TMS is non invasive, requires no downtime, and produces minimal to no side effects.

How does TMS work?

During treatment, patients are administered electromagnetic pulses through the use of a helmet with magnetic coil technology. The electromagnetic current safely regulates neural activity, and “reactivates” regions of the brain that are thought to be under active with depression.

Why TMS?

Proven Results

BrainsWay Deep TMS has been rigorously studied and demonstrated effectiveness in treating depression, OCD, and other conditions. Studies show a substantial reduction in symptoms for a majority of patients.

FDA Cleared

The BrainsWay Deep TMS system is FDA-cleared for treating major depressive disorder and OCD, arming its safety and efficacy.

Targeted Stimulation

Deep TMS technology reaches deeper brain structures associated with mood regulation, potentially enhancing therapeutic outcomes compared to traditional TMS.

Studies reveal that when TMS is integrated with therapy, approximately 75% of patients report a significant improvement in their mental health.

“Among patients who completed at least 30 sessions, approximately four fifths achieved a clinical response and two thirds achieved remission from depression” - BrainsWay

Am I eligible for TMS?

Diagnosis: TMS is typically recommended for individuals diagnosed with conditions such as:

  • Depression Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Previous Treatments: If you have not responded well to medications or psychotherapy, TMS may be a suitable alternative or adjunctive treatment.

Exclusions: While TMS is well-tolerated by many individuals, there are some factors that may impact eligibility:

  • Presence of metallic implants or devices in the head or neck area (exceptions can sometimes be made depending on the type of implant)

  • History of seizures or epilepsy

What can I expect?

Here at CPR, we use BrainsWay Deep TMS, the most effective and high-tech TMS system available. During treatment, clients will be seated in a comfortable chair while the BrainsWay system is placed on their head. Painless electromagnetic pulses will be administered by the helmet for short 20-minute treatment sessions. The machine will be operated by our highly trained and TMS certified staff. There is no recovery period necessary, and clients can drive themselves to and from their appointments.

TMS Timeline

Clients can expect to come into our Tempe clinic for 36 twenty-minute treatment sessions over the course of 8 weeks.

The first appointment is a “brain mapping” session, and may take a bit longer than normal treatment. Our clinician will navigate the TMS machine to determine the helmet location and threshold that will be most effective for each individual client.

For the next 5 weeks, patients will come into our clinic five days a week for treatment. These appointments will only last for 20-30 minutes. Our TMS treatment room is designed for ultimate relaxation and has complimentary amenities such as a beverage station and comfort items. Patients are encouraged to relax and are welcome to listen to music or watch T.V during treatment sessions.

The final three weeks of treatment are the “taper-off” period. Patients come into the clinic for fewer appointments each week until the final treatment session.
